Yoichi Distillery Single Malt Japanese Whisky
Nikka Whisky proudly houses two distinctive distilleries: Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, Yoichi Distillery stands as a testament to his pioneering spirit. As the first Japanese to master whisky making in Scotland, Masataka chose Yoichi due to its proximity to the sea, surrounded by mountains on three sides—a locale reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Masataka introduced a pot still using direct coal-fire, a traditional method seldom employed today due to its challenging temperature control and the need for highly skilled craftsmen. The unique characteristics of Yoichi Single Malt, marked by boldness and toasty burnt flavors, are a direct result of this traditional coal-fired distillation.

Yoichi is Nikka’s first distillery which was built in 1934. Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru was keen on making whisky which was similar to scotch given his training in Scotland. Hokkaido was a obvious choice was this distillery given the similar climactic environment as Scotland. Yoichi Single Malt is characterized by subtle peat smoke originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation combined with the hint of saltiness delivered by the sea breeze during the aging process.
