Ichiro's Malt Chichibu Distillery Japanese Whisky
Chichibu Distillery, founded in 2004 by Ichiro Akuto, an accomplished Japanese whisky maker hailing from a family with a rich history and tradition in Sake brewing since 1625 in Chichibu, Saitama.
Since its inaugural whisky production in 2008, Chichibu Distillery has garnered a devoted global following, thanks to its whiskies. Ichiro San, the driving force behind the distillery, has earned several awards for his exceptional blending and vatting skills. From his efforts to preserve his grandfather's Hanyu casks to the highly sought-after card series bottlings of Hanyu, as well as a diverse range of his vatted malts and experimental releases, Ichiro san has indeed traveled a remarkable journey. His prominent position in the whisky industry is well-deserved.

The Peated 2022 Edition from the Chichibu Distillery was released after a gap of four years. The previous release was bottled in 2018 for the 10th anniversary of Chichibu. Matured in ex-Bourbon barrels for between five and seven years, only 11,000 bottles were produced.
Colour : Pale gold Nose : Peat Smoke and sweet custard notes to start with followed by some peach, apricot and orange Palate : Ripe fruit and stone fruit combined with some smoke at the back. Green fruits such as apple and a hint of salt and vanilla balances the peat.

Bottled in 2019. 11,000 Bottles were released. "On The Way" releases of Chichibu are meant to capture the progress of the Distillery as they head towards their first 10 years old Single Malt release in 2020 (a major milestone for the young but very popular distillery). Chichibu first started making whisky in 2008. A vating of 52 casks, all matured for between five and ten years and primarily first-fill ex-bourbon, a few second-fill chibidaru casks and some hogsheads with mizunara (Japanese oak) heads and some peated whisky. A lot of fresh fruits, green apples, ripe grapes, pineapples with coconut cream and hint of subtle earthiness. Bottle number in image for reference only.

The first official 10-year bottling from the Chichibu Distillery and hence called "The First Ten" was originally supposed to be released so as to coincide with the 2020 Olympics in Japan. There have been other special, single cask, exclusive releases of 10 years old whisky from Chichibu but this is expected to be forming a part of their regular lineup going forward (similar to On The Way, which was supposed to be capturing their journey towards this very milestone).
Fresh and fruity on the nose coming together with smooth honey on the palate eventually leading to a brilliantly long finish to savour. Some of the malt included in this bottling was grown locally in Chichibu. For Chichibu fans, this should truly be a milestone to experience.
The First Ten is bottled at 50.5% ABV, and 5000 bottles were released in November 2020. Bottle number in image for reference only. Rated 5 Stars / 90 points on Whiskyfun.

This rare whisky is a fantastic vatting by Mr. Ichiro Akuto, from two single casks from two lost distilleries, a Hanyu 1990 vintage and a Kawasaki 1982 vintage. This is a special bottling to celebrate the 27th Anniversary of the Kiyosato Field Ballet.
Kawasaki distillery was owned by Mercian Corporation, also the owners of the Karuizawa Distillery, which focused on Malt whisky, while Kawasaki focused on Grain whisky. Located in Kawasaki Prefecture between Tokyo and Yokohama, Kawasaki Distillery used 90% corn and 10% malted barley in Refill Sherry Butts and Demerara Rum casks. Mercian became a part of Kirin Holdings in the 2000s and Karuizawa and Kawasaki were both closed. After being closed, most of inventory of casks were stored in the Yamanashi warehouse and bought by Mr. Ichiro Akuto in 2006.
