Japanese Whisky

On February 16, 2021, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association released new labelling standards for "Japanese Whisky" with the aim of providing clarity on what qualifies as authentic "Japanese Whisky." For a more detailed exploration of this topic, we invite you to peruse our blog post.

These standards not only seek to define the characteristics of Japanese Whisky but also aim to prevent the use of any misleading materials that might suggest a Whisky is Japanese "by implication." It's important to note that these standards, although influential, are not legally binding. Member producers of the association are expected to adopt these standards, potentially leading to clearer labelling and information within the Japanese Whisky industry. However, non-member producers may continue to use vague labelling.

The new standards are set to take effect from April 1, 2021. Producers have been given a grace period until March 2024 to rectify existing labelling, providing some leeway for compliance.

At Mizunara: The Shop Singapore, we are committed to transparency. To the best of our knowledge, we will diligently identify products based on the origin of the distilled spirit within the category of "Whisky from Japan," encompassing both products conforming to the new standards and those that do not. If you ever find yourself uncertain, please don't hesitate to reach out to us for clarification. We are here to assist you in navigating the nuances of Japanese Whisky!
